Dustin, Christy, David and Skippyjon Jones.
We had a great time at the Fossil Beds! We got to see the petrified red wood trees, smell the ponderosa pines and see the cool rocks. The tree stumps above are all different trees. The last stump doesn't look like a stump anymore because so much has been degraded and worn. I was able to get a close up of the rings in their petrified form, that's about all that was left of the stump. I was able to get a good picture of Dustin & David at the big stump which measures 38' in circumference.
The two trees here at the bottom are really cool. The first one has grown up all twisted around. Woodpeckers peck holes and then later the swallows, nuthatches and some other kind would live in the holes. The second tree has a spiral scar from a lightning strike.
While we in Florissant we were able to see some new birds since we started paying attention to birds. We saw a Mountain Bluebird, a Mountain Chickadee, a Stellar's Jay and some Turkey Vultures.
David got to do some activities and games and became a Junior Ranger for the fossil beds. We had a great time. The weather was really nice, David slept part of the way home, and we got more stamps for our passports. Next national forest trip is to Mesa Verde on June 20th.
